North Lincolnshire Museum
An exhibition commissioned by North Lincolnshire Museum, delivered by Common Ground. Inspired by the Museum's folklore collection our curators developed The New Folk.
Folklore permeates all our lives. Parts of our knowledge are from
traditions and stories regardless of who we are, or where we come from.
North Lincolnshire has a wealth of folkloric customs.
During the late 19th and early 20th century these gained the attention of historians. Ethel Rudkin recorded many aspects of Lincolnshire folklore. She dedicated herself to recording this heritage because folklore rarely got documented. In times when most people could not read or write knowledge was often passed on through speech and song.
North Lincolnshire Museum is home to the Ethel Rudkin Collection. The archive includes Rudkin’s documentation of Lincolnshire folklore. Inspired by this collection, The New Folk exhibition features the work of eight contemporary artists. Each one discusses different themes. Including the natural world, rituals and traditions, song, story and the supernatural.
The artworks examine how these subjects are functioning in the present. The museum objects on display will reconnect you with
Lincolnshire’s folkloric past.
